DAVAO OCCIDENTAL, Philippines — Three individuals were safely rescued by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) after the motorized banca they were aboard suffered engine trouble in the waters off Balut Island on Friday, June 6, highlighting the agency’s swift response and commitment to maritime safety.
The rescue operation was carried out by the Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM) through the Coast Guard Station Davao Occidental and Coast Guard Sub-Station Maveas (CGSS Maveas) after authorities received information about a distressed vessel drifting in the area.
According to the PCG, the motorized banca encountered mechanical problems while navigating the vicinity waters of Balut Island, leaving its passengers stranded at sea and in need of immediate assistance.
Upon receiving the report, CGSS Maveas promptly coordinated with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Sarangani and the Philippine National Police Maritime Group in Sarangani to launch a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation.
A joint rescue team was immediately deployed to locate the vessel and ensure the safety of its occupants. Despite the challenges posed by open-sea conditions, responders successfully located the distressed banca and provided the necessary assistance.
Authorities safely towed the vessel to Balut Island, preventing the situation from escalating and ensuring that all three individuals aboard were brought to safety without injury.
Following the rescue, the survivors were transported to the Sarangani Rural Health Unit for medical assessment and monitoring. Initial reports indicated that the individuals were in stable condition after the ordeal.
The successful operation underscores the importance of inter-agency coordination in responding to maritime emergencies and reflects the readiness of local authorities to protect lives at sea.
The Philippine Coast Guard reiterated its commitment to safeguarding mariners and coastal communities through rapid emergency response, search and rescue operations, and continuous maritime monitoring.
As maritime traffic remains active across the waters of Southern Mindanao, the PCG also reminded boat operators and fishermen to conduct regular vessel maintenance, ensure the seaworthiness of their boats, and carry essential communication and safety equipment before venturing out to sea.
The rescue serves as another testament to the dedication of Coast Guard personnel and partner agencies in ensuring that those facing danger in Philippine waters receive immediate and effective assistance.
