DAVAO CITY — The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) confiscated smuggled cigarettes worth more than ₱6.26 million during a series of intensified anti-smuggling operations conducted throughout May 2026, reinforcing the city’s campaign against illegal trade and economic crimes.

Under the leadership of Police Colonel Peter Bauzon Madria, City Director, the DCPO reported the seizure of contraband cigarettes with an estimated value of ₱6,260,080.00, a significant accomplishment that authorities said reflects their commitment to protecting legitimate businesses, preserving government revenues, and curbing criminal activities linked to smuggling operations.

According to the DCPO, the month-long campaign was driven by sustained intelligence-gathering efforts, strengthened law enforcement coordination, and active support from local communities.

Police officials emphasized that smuggling not only deprives the government of tax revenues but also undermines lawful commerce and fuels underground economic activities that threaten public welfare and national security.

“The success of these operations demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-driven policing and the power of collaboration among various stakeholders,” the DCPO said in a statement.

Authorities credited the operation’s success to close coordination among law enforcement agencies, regulatory bodies, local government units, and barangay officials. Through synchronized enforcement efforts, rapid information sharing, and swift operational responses, authorities were able to intercept and confiscate large volumes of illegally imported tobacco products before they could be distributed in local markets.

Beyond government efforts, police highlighted the critical role played by residents in the anti-smuggling campaign. Dabawenyos who promptly reported suspicious activities contributed valuable information that helped authorities identify and disrupt illegal trading operations.

The DCPO noted that community participation remains one of the strongest weapons against organized illegal activities, stressing that public safety and economic security are shared responsibilities between law enforcement agencies and citizens.

PCOL Madria underscored the importance of maintaining strong partnerships between the police and the public, saying that the fight against smuggling requires a united and coordinated approach.

He emphasized that through trust, cooperation, and collective vigilance, law enforcement agencies can strengthen their operational capabilities and effectively combat illicit trade while maintaining peace and order in the city.

The intensified campaign aligns with the directive of Philippine National Police Chief, Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., to strengthen nationwide efforts against smuggling networks and prevent the proliferation of illegal goods in communities.

Police authorities vowed to sustain aggressive monitoring and enforcement operations in the coming months, warning smugglers and illegal traders that law enforcement agencies will continue to tighten surveillance and pursue violators.

The DCPO assured the public that stronger collaborative mechanisms, enhanced intelligence operations, and focused law enforcement actions will remain in place to ensure that Davao City remains protected from smuggling and other forms of criminality.

Officials described the ₱6.26-million seizure as more than just a law enforcement achievement, calling it a testament to what can be accomplished when government agencies and citizens work together toward a common goal.

As authorities continue to crack down on illicit trade, the DCPO said the accomplishment serves as proof that through unity, vigilance, and shared responsibility, a safer, stronger, and more secure Davao City can be achieved and sustained.
