A 14-year-old girl was found dead in an apparent hanging incident early Monday morning, May 12, in Purok 1, Barangay Libayoy, Tigbao, Zamboanga del Sur, leaving her family and community in grief and disbelief.

The victim, identified by authorities and residents through alias “Crystal,” was a Grade 8 student and a resident of the said barangay. According to initial reports, the teenager was discovered hanging from a marang tree in the area by relatives and residents early in the morning.
Police investigators said the victim may have died the night before and was only discovered at daybreak. Family members immediately sought assistance from local authorities and the Rural Health Unit (RHU) of Tigbao to recover the body and conduct proper procedures.
Authorities have launched an ongoing investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and to establish whether foul play was involved. As of this writing, police said there were no immediate indications of external violence, but investigations remain ongoing.
The victim’s family, meanwhile, said they remain unaware of what may have driven the young girl to take her own life, adding to the pain and confusion surrounding the incident.
The tragic death has sparked sadness among residents, with many expressing concern over the growing mental health challenges faced by young people, particularly teenagers silently struggling with emotional burdens, anxiety, loneliness, and depression.
Mental health advocates continue to remind the public that depression is a serious and life-threatening condition that should never be ignored or dismissed. Experts emphasize that people experiencing emotional distress, hopelessness, or suicidal thoughts need compassion, understanding, and immediate support—not judgment.
Families, schools, communities, and friends are urged to check on loved ones, especially young individuals who may be silently battling emotional pain. Simple conversations, emotional support, and professional intervention can save lives.
