Seven former members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters voluntarily surrendered to government authorities on Thursday under the government’s Balik-Baril and Balik-Loob Program, marking another step in the ongoing peace and reintegration efforts in Maguindanao del Sur.

The surrender ceremony was held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on May 7, 2026, at the headquarters of the 90th Infantry Battalion in Barangay Kabengi, Datu Saudi Ampatuan.

Military officials said the successful surrender was the result of intensified peace and order initiatives spearheaded by the 601st Infantry Brigade under the leadership of Brig. Gen. Edgar I. Catu, commander of the brigade.

Authorities said the former combatants decided to abandon armed struggle and return to civilian life in pursuit of peace and stability for their families and communities.

As part of their surrender, the seven former rebels turned over a total of 27 assorted small arms and light weapons, including improvised heavy firepower and one hand grenade. The recovered firearms are now under the custody of the 90IB for proper documentation and processing.

The activity was witnessed by local government officials led by the municipal mayor of Datu Saudi Ampatuan, provincial officials, and representatives from several government agencies, including the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Agrarian Reform.

Under the Balik-Loob Program, the surrenderers received immediate assistance packages, including relief goods and livelihood support aimed at helping them transition back into mainstream society.

Police Colonel Michael John C. Mangahis also expressed support for the reintegration initiative, commending the efforts of the 90IB and the 601st Brigade in sustaining peace efforts in conflict-affected communities.

Mangahis emphasized the crucial role of local government units in ensuring that former combatants receive continuous social services and economic opportunities necessary for rebuilding their lives.

He also stressed that peacebuilding efforts must be pursued with sincerity, compassion, and long-term commitment to prevent former rebels from returning to armed conflict.

Military officials said the latest surrender reflects the growing confidence of former insurgents in the government’s peace programs and the continuing collaboration among security forces, local governments, and partner agencies in promoting lasting peace in Central Mindanao.
