Cagayan de Oro City, May 6, 2026 — A 41-year-old Chinese national narrowly escaped a life-threatening situation after jumping into the Cagayan de Oro River along the Puntod dike early this morning. The man, identified as Shaolong Du, a resident of Escobido Street, Barangay Puntod, was rescued by police at approximately 5:40 a.m.

Authorities were alerted by a concerned citizen who reported seeing a man leap from the dike into the river. Police from Station 5 responded immediately and successfully rescued Du, bringing him safely to the police station for further assistance.
According to PLT Daryn Labuga, deputy station commander of Police Station 5, the victim told authorities that he jumped into the river because he feared for his life. Du claimed that some of his acquaintances, also Chinese nationals, intended to harm him.
Investigators are still looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Du is currently under police custody, and plans are underway to turn him over to his Filipino wife later today for proper care and legal disposition.
Further reports from the station revealed that Du had been intoxicated for the past five days. He allegedly attempted to escape after being confronted by two armed individuals who threatened him, prompting him to leap into the river to evade potential harm.
Du’s rescue underscores the swift response of local authorities and the vigilance of the community in averting a possible tragedy. Police continue to investigate the matter to ensure the safety of the victim and identify the individuals involved.
