DATU ODIN SINSUAT, Maguindanao del Norte — Armed clashes between two rival Moro front groups that erupted on the evening of May 5, 2026, continue to fuel tension in Barangay Bagoinged, forcing families to flee and prompting urgent intervention from local authorities.

The firefight began at around 6 p.m. on Tuesday and persisted through the night into Wednesday, according to Municipal Councilor Datu Sorab Lumanggal, chair of the Committee on Peace and Order.
Lumanggal said he immediately initiated coordination with both groups in an effort to de-escalate the situation and prevent further violence. The intervention is being carried out under the supervision of Mayor Abdulmain “Baba” Abas and Vice Mayor Datu Bobsteel Sinsuat.
“We are doing everything we can to stop the fighting and ensure the safety of civilians caught in the crossfire,” Lumanggal said.
Civilians Rescued Amid Ongoing Gunfire
As the exchange of gunfire intensified, several civilians were trapped in the conflict zone. A rescue operation led by Lumanggal successfully extracted residents from the area, with support from Barangay Chairman Datu Bonang Sinsuat, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), and personnel of the Datu Odin Sinsuat Police.
Responders reportedly entered difficult and high-risk areas to reach stranded families and escort them to safety.
Some displaced residents are now temporarily staying in a former school building in Sitio Nursery, Barangay Bagoinged, which has been converted into an evacuation center. Others were immediately transported to safer locations by MDRRMO personnel.
Authorities confirmed that those rescued have been safely evacuated.
Tension Remains High, Casualties Unconfirmed
Despite the evacuation efforts, the firefight between the two armed groups continued as of Wednesday, with intermittent gunfire still being reported in the area.
There are still no official reports confirming casualties or injuries, leaving the extent of the damage uncertain.
Local authorities remain on heightened alert, monitoring developments closely and preparing for additional evacuations if necessary.
Public Advisory Issued
The MDRRMO has issued a public advisory urging residents to avoid Barangay Bagoinged and remain calm while awaiting official updates.
“Authorities are already on the ground to mediate and maintain peace and order. We urge everyone to stay away from the area and prioritize safety,” the advisory stated.
The local government reiterated its commitment to protecting civilians and pursuing dialogue to end the violence, as uncertainty continues to grip the community following the clashes that began Tuesday night.
