MARAWI CITY, Philippines — After two decades of tension, conflict, and deep-seated division, a long-standing rido (family feud) between two families in Barangay Kialdan, Marantao, Lanao del Sur has finally been resolved through a peaceful settlement facilitated by local leaders.

The breakthrough agreement was reached on May 5 during a formal gathering at the Social Hall of the Provincial Capitol in Lanao del Sur Provincial Capitol, marking a significant milestone in community reconciliation efforts in the province.

Leading the mediation were Marantao Mayor Akira Alonto and Lanao del Sur Vice Governor Mohammad Khalid Adiong, widely known as “Mujam,” alongside respected elders and community leaders who played key roles in bridging divides between the conflicting parties.

Also instrumental in the peace process was former Marantao Vice Mayor Alahuding Salic Maruhom, whose presence, along with his family and associates, helped foster dialogue and mutual understanding. Leaders from Barangay Kialdan and neighboring communities likewise extended support, underscoring the collective will to end the violence and restore harmony.

The families involved voluntarily entered into the agreement, expressing full consent to amicably settle their dispute and bring closure to years of misunderstanding rooted in what was described as an “unfortunate twist of fate.” The settlement signifies not only the end of hostilities but also a renewed commitment to coexist peacefully moving forward.

Local officials emphasized that the resolution reflects the enduring value of unity and reconciliation in Mindanao communities, where rido has historically contributed to cycles of violence and displacement. The successful mediation also highlights the importance of culturally grounded conflict resolution mechanisms, including the involvement of elders, religious guidance, and local governance.

Quoting a verse from the Qur’an — “Indeed, the believers are but brothers, so make peace between your brothers” (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:10) — leaders framed the settlement as both a social and spiritual victory.

Authorities and community stakeholders expressed hope that the resolution will inspire similar efforts to address other lingering clan conflicts across the region, paving the way for lasting peace and development in Marantao and beyond.
