LUPON, DAVAO ORIENTAL — A disturbing case of alleged animal cruelty has sparked outrage online after the horse of a young singing finalist was reportedly beaten to death in a rural community in Davao Oriental.

The victim, a horse named “Jack” owned by Yassi Estrera, was found severely injured in Sitio Manlipig, Barangay Maragatas, Lupon, following a violent incident believed to have occurred on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. The animal succumbed to its injuries two days later, on Friday, May 1.
According to Estrera’s public statement, Jack sustained multiple traumatic injuries, including broken ribs and blood clots, allegedly caused by repeated beating and stoning by unidentified individuals. The attack has not only resulted in the loss of the animal but has also triggered calls for accountability and justice from netizens and animal welfare advocates.
In an emotional post on social media, Estrera condemned the brutality inflicted on her horse, stressing that animals are sentient beings capable of feeling pain and emotions.
“Animal cruelty is never and never will be okay no matter what the reason is. They have a life, emotions, and feelings—just like us,” she said, as she appealed for justice for Jack.
Local authorities and barangay officials in Maragatas have reportedly been informed of the incident, although, as of this writing, no suspect has been publicly identified or arrested. Investigations are expected to focus on determining the individuals responsible for the killing and the possible motive behind the attack.
The incident has renewed public attention on the enforcement of animal welfare laws in the Philippines, particularly Republic Act No. 8485, as amended by Republic Act No. 10631. The law penalizes acts of cruelty, maltreatment, and neglect of animals, with violators facing fines and imprisonment.
Animal rights groups have long pushed for stricter enforcement of these laws, citing persistent cases of abuse, especially in rural areas where monitoring is limited.
As calls for justice grow louder, Estrera and her supporters continue to urge witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist authorities in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
The killing of Jack has not only left a young owner grieving but has also ignited a broader conversation on compassion, accountability, and the urgent need to protect animals from senseless violence.
