DATU ODIN SINSUAT, Maguindanao del Norte — Authorities seized an estimated ₱50 million worth of smuggled cigarettes during a coordinated anti-smuggling operation in Barangay Dinaig Proper on the morning of April 3, intensifying the government’s crackdown on illicit tobacco trade in the Bangsamoro region.

The operation, carried out by joint elements of the Datu Odin Sinsuat Municipal Police Station, the Maguindanao del Norte Provincial Police Office, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group–Regional Field Office in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, the Bureau of Customs, and the local government unit, resulted in the interception of multiple boxes of undocumented cigarettes believed to have originated from Indonesia.

Authorities reported that the cigarettes were discovered in bulk quantities, packed in large boxes, and lacked the necessary importation documents and tax stamps required under Philippine law. The shipment is suspected to have been intended for distribution in local markets, potentially depriving the government of millions in excise tax revenues.

Officials underscored that the successful seizure highlights the importance of inter-agency cooperation in combating smuggling activities, which continue to pose economic and security challenges in parts of Mindanao.

Investigations are ongoing to identify the individuals or groups behind the illegal shipment, as well as to trace the supply chain and intended distribution network. Authorities are also pursuing possible charges for violations of customs and tax laws, as well as other related offenses.

The confiscated cigarettes are now under the custody of the Bureau of Customs for proper documentation and disposition.

The operation forms part of intensified enforcement efforts against the proliferation of smuggled goods in the region, as authorities reaffirm their commitment to safeguarding legitimate trade and protecting government revenues.
