DAVAO CITY — A pregnant woman and her unborn child died on Monday morning, March 30, following complications during childbirth, despite urgent efforts by local responders and community officials in the upland areas of Marilog District.

The patient, a resident of Sitio Kabanlasan in Barangay Datu Salumay, was initially transported to Kibalang Hospital by emergency responders from 911 Salumay after experiencing difficulty in labor. However, the hospital reportedly did not admit her due to the critical condition of the baby, which was in a breech position—meaning the infant’s feet were positioned to come out first, increasing the risk of complications.

Due to the emergency, the patient was referred for transfer and was brought to Barangay Marilog Proper, where local authorities quickly mobilized assistance. Barangay Captain Jeanette Inday Suam personally facilitated the response, coordinating with the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (BDRRMC) staff.

At approximately 8:35 a.m., the patient was transported to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC), a tertiary hospital in Davao City, for advanced medical care.

Despite the swift coordination and response from emergency teams and local officials, both the mother and her unborn child were later declared dead.

Barangay Marilog Proper expressed gratitude to all responders and community members who extended assistance during the emergency. At the same time, local officials emphasized the importance of regular prenatal check-ups to monitor pregnancy risks and prevent similar tragedies.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges in accessing timely and adequate maternal healthcare services in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas, where distance, limited facilities, and emergency response constraints can significantly impact outcomes for mothers and infants.
