DATU PIANG, Maguindanao del Sur — The body of a Chinese national who had been reported missing for several days was discovered buried in a remote area of Barangay Upper Masigay, raising serious concerns over possible foul play, authorities confirmed.

The victim was identified as Shang Lai Hong, an adult Chinese national who had been the subject of a search after losing contact with companions during a trip across Mindanao.
According to initial police reports, Hong had traveled from Pangasinan alongside two individuals—one a resident of Tacurong City and another from Datu Piang, Maguindanao del Sur—en route to Sultan Kudarat province. However, communication with the group abruptly ceased at around 1:00 a.m., when all three mobile phones, including Hong’s, became unreachable.
Days after the disappearance was reported, authorities conducted a search operation that led to the grim discovery. Hong’s remains were found buried in Barangay Upper Masigay, a remote village that straddles areas within Datu Piang and nearby Datu Salibo.
Investigators have yet to disclose the condition of the body or the exact cause of death, pending forensic examination. However, the circumstances surrounding the case—including the sudden loss of contact and the clandestine burial—have fueled suspicions that the victim may have been killed.
Police are now working to identify and locate the two individuals last seen with Hong, who are considered key persons of interest in the ongoing investigation. Coordination with local government units and intelligence operatives is underway to track their whereabouts.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) in Maguindanao del Sur has assured the public that all angles are being pursued, including possible motives such as robbery, personal dispute, or organized criminal activity.
Authorities are also coordinating with the Chinese Embassy to facilitate proper identification procedures and to assist in notifying the victim’s family.
The discovery has alarmed residents in the area, prompting calls for heightened security and more aggressive law enforcement operations to prevent similar incidents.
As of this writing, the investigation remains ongoing, with police urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
