TAGBINA, Surigao del Sur — A ranking public school official was arrested in a late-night anti-drug operation on March 20, 2026, in a development that has sent shockwaves through the local education sector and raised serious concerns over accountability among public servants.

Operatives from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency Regional Office 13 (PDEA RO 13), in coordination with the Tagbina Municipal Police Station (MPS), conducted a buy-bust operation at around 10:47 p.m. in Purok 3, San Jose, Barangay Poblacion. The operation resulted in the arrest of a 45-year-old male who serves as a District 1 School Supervisor, holding the rank of Principal III in Tagbina.
Authorities withheld the suspect’s identity pending formal charges, but confirmed that he is a resident of the area and an active figure in the local education system.
Weeks of Surveillance
According to law enforcement officials, the operation was not случайный, but the result of weeks of meticulous intelligence gathering, surveillance, and validation conducted by multiple anti-drug units. The suspect had been under close monitoring after reports surfaced linking him to illegal drug activities.
Only after sufficient evidence was established did authorities move in to carry out the buy-bust operation, underscoring what officials described as a “deliberate and evidence-based approach” to the arrest.
Evidence Seized
Recovered from the suspect were two heat-sealed transparent plastic sachets containing suspected shabu, with an estimated street value of ₱6,800. Also seized were the marked buy-bust money used during the transaction, further strengthening the case against the suspect.
He was immediately informed of his constitutional rights following the arrest and is now under the custody of the Tagbina MPS.
Breach of Public Trust
Officials did not mince words in condemning the implications of the arrest, particularly given the suspect’s role in shaping young minds.
“This development highlights the importance of vigilance and accountability in public service. Positions of authority must never be used to undermine the law or endanger the community,” said PDEA RO 13 Regional Director Laurefel Gabales.
The arrest has sparked outrage and disappointment among residents and stakeholders in the education sector, with many expressing concern over the erosion of trust in institutions meant to guide and protect the youth.
Charges Filed
The suspect is set to face charges for violation of Section 5, Article II of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, which penalizes the sale, trading, administration, dispensation, delivery, distribution, and transportation of illegal drugs.
Ongoing Crackdown
PDEA reiterated its commitment to intensifying its campaign against illegal drugs, with a particular focus on high-value individuals and those in positions of influence whose involvement in criminal activities could have far-reaching consequences.
The agency stressed that no one is above the law, warning that public office will not serve as a shield against prosecution.
As investigations continue, the case stands as a stark reminder that the fight against illegal drugs extends even into institutions entrusted with molding the nation’s future.
