Authorities seized an estimated ₱256,704 worth of smuggled cigarettes during a checkpoint operation conducted by police in Sitio Central, Barangay Dinganen, Buldon, Maguindanao del Norte, the local police reported.

Personnel of the Buldon Municipal Police Station (MPS) intercepted the illegal goods after inspecting a vehicle that passed through the checkpoint. During the inspection, officers discovered 300 reams of suspected smuggled cigarettes, which were immediately confiscated by authorities.

The individuals transporting the contraband were arrested on the spot. Police said the suspects were informed of their constitutional rights before being brought to the Buldon Municipal Police Station for proper documentation and further investigation.

Authorities have yet to disclose the identities of the arrested individuals as of this writing, pending the filing of appropriate charges.

According to Buldon Chief of Police Captain Elmar Elarcosa, the successful seizure underscores the continued efforts of the local police to curb the proliferation of illegal goods in the municipality.

“Our checkpoint operations are part of our intensified campaign against illegal activities to ensure the safety and security of the public,” Elarcosa said.

Smuggling of cigarettes remains a persistent issue in several parts of Maguindanao del Norte, where illegal tobacco products are often transported through remote routes to evade law enforcement. Authorities said operations will continue to be strengthened, particularly in strategic checkpoints, to intercept contraband and hold those involved accountable under the law.

Police are now preparing the necessary charges against the suspects while the confiscated cigarettes are being secured as evidence for the filing of appropriate cases.
