CAMP SIONGCO, Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte — Government forces recovered several firearms and war materials after intervening to de-escalate a confrontation between two armed groups in Barangay Sapakan, Mamasapano, Maguindanao del Sur on March 6, authorities reported.

The operation was carried out through a Joint Law Enforcement Support Operation led by the 34th Infantry Battalion in coordination with police stations from Mamasapano, Rajah Buayan, and Shariff Aguak. The security response was launched following reports of a community-based conflict that threatened to escalate into a wider armed confrontation.

Authorities said the intervention also involved monitoring by the Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities (CCCH), a joint body tasked with overseeing ceasefire agreements between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

Security forces immediately deployed measures to prevent further violence and to ensure the safety of residents in nearby communities.

Following the stabilization of the situation, troops conducted clearing operations in the area where they recovered four M16 rifles, several magazines, bandoliers, and ammunition believed to have been abandoned during the clash between the two armed factions. The groups involved were reportedly linked to the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces (BIAF), the armed wing of the MILF.

Authorities confirmed that no civilians were harmed during the clearing operations.

Brig. Gen. Edgar L. Catu, commander of the 601st Infantry Brigade, emphasized the importance of swift coordination among security forces and peace stakeholders to prevent violence from spreading.

“Immediate coordination among the military, police, and concerned stakeholders is crucial in calming tensions and ensuring the protection of civilians,” Catu said.

Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Jose Vladimir R. Gagara, commander of the 6th Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Central, reiterated the military’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Bangsamoro region.

Gagara stressed that sustained collaboration among the armed forces, law enforcement agencies, peace partners, and local leaders remains vital in preventing further armed confrontations and strengthening security across communities in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation while engaging local leaders and peace mechanisms to ensure that tensions between the rival groups do not reignite.
