Mamasapano, Maguindanao del Sur — Government troops recovered four high-powered firearms, including a rocket-propelled grenade, following a tense armed encounter between rival groups that alarmed residents in Barangay Libutan on April 22, 2026.

The operation was carried out by the 38th Infantry (We Clear) Battalion under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Erwin E. Felongco, after villagers reported a violent exchange of gunfire between two feuding armed factions. The clash, which erupted in the community, triggered fear and panic among civilians, prompting immediate military intervention.

Responding swiftly, troops launched a combat patrol and clearing operations to secure the area, verify reports, and prevent further escalation of violence. During the operation, soldiers discovered and seized abandoned war materiel believed to have been left behind by the armed groups.

Among the recovered items were a Mini Uzi submachine gun with a magazine, a carbine rifle, a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG), and an M79 grenade launcher—an arsenal that underscored the gravity of the confrontation and the potential threat to civilian safety.

“We received reports of a firefight between rival groups that caused significant चिंता among residents. Our forces immediately conducted patrol operations to verify the information, track down those involved, and restore peace and order in the area,” Felongco said.

Military officials emphasized that the rapid response was crucial in preventing further violence and ensuring the safety of the community.

Brigadier General Edgar L. Catu, commander of the 601st Infantry Brigade, reiterated the Armed Forces’ commitment to protecting civilians and maintaining peace in conflict-prone areas.

“We will not stop until we ensure the safety of every family and community we serve. The military remains a steadfast partner of the people in upholding peace and security,” Catu said.

Meanwhile, Major General Jose Vladimir R. Cagara, commander of Joint Task Force Central and the 6th Infantry Division, described the recovery of the weapons as a significant step toward preventing further bloodshed.

“The seizure of these firearms is a crucial measure in averting potential violence. We urge the public to continue cooperating with authorities to sustain peace and order in their communities,” Cagara stated.

Authorities have yet to identify the armed groups involved in the clash, and follow-up operations are ongoing to track down those responsible.

The successful operation highlights the continuing efforts of the military to address armed conflict in vulnerable communities and reinforces its commitment to safeguarding lives and restoring stability in the region.
