OPOL, Misamis Oriental — Authorities arrested a retired police officer and seven other individuals during a joint law enforcement operation targeting a suspected illegal mining activity in Zone 1, Barangay Limonda, Opol, Misamis Oriental.

The operation was conducted by personnel from the Opol Police Station, the Provincial Task Force Kalikasan ug Kalinaw, the Regional Mobile Force Battalion, the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company, and the Provincial Intelligence Unit under the Philippine National Police.
Police identified the arrested suspects as Jhoven, 40, married, from Esperanza, Agusan del Sur; Joselito, 32, single, from Pangantucan, Davao de Oro; Raniel, 23, single, from Kapatagan, Lanao del Sur; Joselito, 49, single, from Bantoran, Davao de Oro; Riszand, 35, single, a resident of Barangay Limonda, Opol; Roel, 45, married, from New Bataan, Davao de Oro; Eduard, 37, single, from Kahapunan, Valencia City, Bukidnon; and Jimmy, 60, a retired member of the PNP and resident of Barangay Gusa, Cagayan de Oro City.
According to authorities, the suspects were allegedly engaged in illegal mining activities in the area when law enforcement units moved in to carry out the operation. The raid resulted in the confiscation of numerous items believed to be used in mineral processing and extraction.
Among the seized evidence were ten ₱1,000 bills believed to be marked money, 20 ballmill drums, 10 ballmill covers, 11 ballmill rods, 20 fan belts, and 379 sacks of suspected mineral ores. Authorities also recovered several chemicals commonly used in gold processing, including oxalic acid, silver nitrate, iodine potassium, and phenolphthalein.
Investigators said the presence of ballmill equipment and chemical substances indicated that the group was allegedly involved in processing mineral ores extracted from the area without the necessary permits from the government.
Law enforcement officials emphasized that the operation forms part of intensified efforts to crack down on illegal mining activities in Misamis Oriental, which authorities say threaten the environment, public safety, and local communities.
Illegal mining has long been a concern in parts of Mindanao, where unregulated extraction of mineral resources has been linked to environmental degradation, soil erosion, and contamination of waterways. Government task forces have been conducting sustained monitoring and enforcement operations to address the problem.
The arrested individuals are currently detained and are expected to face charges related to violations of mining and environmental laws. Authorities said further investigation is ongoing to determine whether other individuals or groups are involved in the alleged illegal operation and to trace the possible source and intended processing of the seized mineral ores.
