CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Authorities intercepted an alleged illegal transport of minerals and arrested nine individuals — including two active members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) — during a routine checkpoint in Barangay Limonda, Opol, Misamis Oriental, on December 29, 2025.

Personnel of the 1001st Maneuver Company, Regional Mobile Force Battalion 10 (RMFB 10), in coordination with the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company (PMFC) of the Misamis Oriental Police Provincial Office (MORPPO), flagged down two pickup trucks reportedly transporting the minerals to Davao del Sur.

Upon inspection, the vehicle occupants failed to present the required permits for the mineral cargo, prompting authorities to effect the arrest.

Among those apprehended were two AFP personnel identified only as alias “Nor” and alias “Ric.” Also arrested were two drivers — alias “Ray” and alias “Dong” — along with individuals identified as “Gene,” “Ruro,” “Junior,” “Ram,” and “Win.”

Seized during the operation were 60 sacks of alleged unprocessed minerals valued at approximately ₱300,000, the two pickup trucks, and two Glock 17 Gen 4 pistols with 26 live rounds.

All suspects are currently in police custody while appropriate charges are being prepared for violation of Section 53 of Republic Act 7942 or the Philippine Mining Act of 1995.

Police Regional Office 10 (PRO 10) Regional Director PBGEN Christopher N. Abrahano emphasized the significance of consistent enforcement actions against illegal mining.

“This operation reflects our firm commitment to enforcing environmental laws and holding accountable those who engage in illegal mining activities. We will continue to strengthen our coordination with partner agencies to protect our natural resources and ensure public safety,” he said.

Abrahano also called on the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities that may harm the environment or jeopardize community safety.
