DANGCAGAN, Bukidnon — A tense hostage-taking incident that began with a theft complaint ended in the arrest of a 41-year-old man after he allegedly held an 18-year-old pregnant woman at knifepoint during a hot pursuit operation on the afternoon of February 24, 2026.

Authorities from the Dangcagan Municipal Police Station identified the suspect only as alias “Robert,” who is now facing charges of theft and serious illegal detention following the dramatic incident in Purok 3, Barangay Lourdes, in the town of Dangcagan.

According to initial police and community reports, the suspect was first caught by local residents after he was allegedly seen stealing avocados in the area. Residents turned him over to authorities, but while he was being brought to the police station, the suspect reportedly managed to escape, triggering an immediate pursuit operation by responding officers.

During the chase, the suspect allegedly forced his way into a nearby house and seized an 18-year-old pregnant woman, threatening her with a knife. Witnesses said the man dragged the victim while issuing threats against her life, creating panic among residents and prompting urgent police intervention.

Police negotiators attempted to calm the suspect and secure the release of the pregnant woman. After several tense minutes, officers moved in when the suspect momentarily loosened his hold on the victim, allowing them to safely subdue and arrest him.

Two police officers and the suspect sustained minor injuries during the operation, authorities said. The pregnant victim, however, was rescued unharmed and is reported to be in safe condition following the incident.

Responding personnel were led by Police Master Sergeant Kennith Anol, team leader of the operation. Officers also recovered the bladed weapon allegedly used by the suspect during the hostage-taking.

The suspect is now under police custody and is expected to face formal charges related to theft and serious illegal detention as investigators continue to document the case.

Police authorities commended the quick response of law enforcement and the cooperation of residents, noting that the swift action prevented what could have escalated into a more dangerous situation, especially given the condition of the hostage.
