PANAMAO, Sulu — A potentially deadly armed conflict between two groups in the municipality of Panamao, Sulu was successfully defused following swift and coordinated intervention by the local government and the Philippine Army, preventing further violence and restoring calm in the area.
The dispute, which stemmed from a minor misunderstanding, escalated into a serious security threat after gunfire was reportedly exchanged. Authorities identified Abdurajik Lahab, a resident of Barangay Puhagan, as the first party involved in the incident, while Kaidar Hamjaji, Muksidar Uraid, Badjo Asgari, and Aldamir Hamsiaraji, all residents of Barangay Datag, were identified as the second party.
Recognizing the risk of the situation spiraling into a wider armed confrontation, troops of the 21st Infantry Battalion (21IB) under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Ronald A. Borras immediately responded, working closely with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Panamao to contain the tension.
An amicable settlement and conflict resolution process was promptly conducted with the participation of Mayor Alfravha S. Jairulla, represented by First Municipal Councilor Hon. Rainer S. Agga, and PEMS Yasher A. Pintasan of the Panamao Municipal Police Station. Through dialogue and mediation, both parties agreed to formally end their dispute and commit to maintaining peace and order within their respective communities.
As a concrete outcome of the settlement and in line with the strict enforcement of Panamao’s Gun-Free Zone and Peace-Centered Community policy, an M16 rifle used during the incident was voluntarily surrendered to authorities, underscoring the parties’ commitment to de-escalation and community safety.
Local officials and military authorities emphasized that the peaceful resolution reflects the effectiveness of close civil-military cooperation in addressing grassroots conflicts before they erupt into prolonged violence—a recurring challenge in parts of Sulu.
The 21st Infantry Battalion, together with other security forces and the local government, reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying peace and security measures across the province. Residents were likewise urged to remain vigilant, cooperate with authorities, and promptly report any threats to public safety.
Officials stressed that sustained peace in Sulu depends not only on security operations but also on dialogue, cooperation, and the collective responsibility of communities to reject violence and uphold the rule of law.
