Esperanza, Agusan del Sur — January 23, 2026
Joint intelligence teams of the Philippine Army have successfully neutralized a serious security threat in Agusan del Sur after recovering three powerful anti-personnel landmines concealed in a rural village, military officials confirmed.

The operation was carried out by troops from the 28th Infantry Battalion (28IB), led by Lt. Col. Ronaldo Ferrer, and the 26th Infantry Battalion (26IB) under Lt. Col. Jose Redentor Gilbuela, following precision intelligence-gathering and information provided by concerned residents of Barangay San Vicente, Esperanza.

According to the military, the recovered devices were improvised explosive devices (IEDs), each weighing approximately three kilograms, and were strategically hidden in an area frequently accessed by civilians. Authorities said the landmines posed a direct and imminent danger to farmers, residents, and security forces conducting patrols in the vicinity.

Explosive ordnance disposal-trained personnel immediately secured and rendered the devices safe, preventing what officials described as a potential tragedy.

“This recovery is not just about hardware; it’s about preventing a tragedy,” said Brig. Gen. Adolfo B. Espuelas Jr., Commander of the 402nd Infantry Brigade. “By removing these illegal devices, we are ensuring that the farmers and families of San Vicente can move freely without the shadow of fear. Our synergy with the community remains our greatest asset in maintaining the peace.”

The operation forms part of intensified counter-insurgency and security efforts in the province, where armed groups have previously used landmines to disrupt peace and economic activity, particularly in farming communities.

The Joint Task Force Diamond (JTF Diamond), under the command of Maj. Gen. Michele B. Anayron Jr., has launched follow-up operations to identify those responsible for planting the landmines and to ensure that nearby areas are free of similar explosive hazards.

Military authorities also urged residents to remain vigilant and immediately report suspicious objects, disturbed soil, or unusual activities to the nearest military or police unit.

JTF Diamond reiterated its commitment to safeguarding communities and sustaining peace and development in Agusan del Sur and the wider region, emphasizing that public cooperation remains critical in preventing violence and protecting civilian lives.
