BUTUAN CITY — A 61-year-old farmer is fighting for his life after he was repeatedly hacked by his neighbor during a drinking session in Purok 2, Barangay Baobaoan, Butuan City on Sunday afternoon, December 21, 2025.

The victim was identified as Pablo Gionaldo, also known as “Kalbo,” married and a resident of the area. He sustained multiple stab and hack wounds to different parts of his body and remains in critical condition at the Butuan Medical Center, where he was rushed for emergency treatment.

Police identified the suspect as Gilbert Tahuf, also known as “Dodo,” 41, likewise a resident of Purok 2, Barangay Baobaoan.

According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), the victim and the suspect were drinking alcoholic beverages at a neighbor’s house when a heated argument erupted. What initially started as a verbal exchange reportedly escalated into a violent confrontation.

Investigators said the suspect allegedly went home to retrieve a bladed weapon locally known as a “binangon,” then returned and attacked the victim, striking him multiple times and targeting various parts of his body.

Barangay residents immediately sought help, prompting authorities to respond. The victim was swiftly transported to the hospital due to the severity of his injuries.

The suspect was arrested by personnel of the Los Angeles Police Station shortly after the incident. He is currently under police custody and is expected to face charges of frustrated murder through inquest proceedings.

Police authorities are continuing their investigation and have reminded the public of the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption, which often triggers violent disputes within communities.
