OZAMIS CITY — Police authorities were alarmed after discovering that a suspicious gift left near a pharmacy in Barangay Bañadero contained a live grenade and illegal drugs, raising serious concerns over public safety and possible criminal intent.

According to initial police reports, the “gift” was found abandoned near the pharmacy, prompting residents to alert authorities. Upon inspection by responding officers, the package was confirmed to contain a grenade and suspected shabu, immediately triggering security protocols to prevent potential harm.
Police said the discovery could have resulted in serious damage, injuries, or even loss of life had the grenade detonated in the crowded area. Authorities expressed relief that the explosive device did not go off, noting that the incident could have turned deadly given the proximity to civilians and establishments.
The identity of the person who left the package remains unknown. Investigators are now intensifying efforts to trace the suspect, including reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage in the area and along possible routes taken by the individual who abandoned the package. Police are also working to determine the motive behind the act, including whether it was intended as a threat, diversion, or part of a larger criminal operation.
The seized grenade and illegal drugs were turned over for proper handling and forensic examination, while the area was temporarily secured to ensure public safety.
Authorities urged the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious objects or activities to the police. “This incident highlights the danger posed by abandoned items in public places. Cooperation from the community is crucial to prevent tragedies,” police said.
The investigation is ongoing.
