MAPUN, TAWI-TAWI – In a remarkable display of vigilance and inter-agency coordination, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Northern Tawi-Tawi, in partnership with the Coast Guard Intelligence Unit – Northern Tawi-Tawi, Mapun Municipal Police Station, and the Maritime Special Boat Crew (MSBC), successfully intercepted a suspected human trafficking operation on August 14, 2025.

The operation led to the rescue of 20 alleged victims of trafficking in persons at the Port of Mapun. Authorities revealed that the victims had departed from Zamboanga City onboard a motorbanca and were allegedly bound for Sabah, Malaysia, through an illegal border crossing. None of them carried proper travel documents.

Thanks to the swift and decisive action of the Coast Guard and their law enforcement partners, the victims were spared from falling into the hands of human trafficking syndicates. They are now under the care of the Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD), where they are receiving immediate assistance, shelter, and protection.

Authorities emphasized that this successful rescue underscores the unwavering commitment of the PCG and its partner agencies to protect the nation’s maritime borders against transnational crimes, particularly human trafficking, which continues to pose a serious threat to vulnerable Filipinos.

The PCG assured the public that its forces remain steadfast, vigilant, and proactive in guarding the country’s seas against illegal maritime activities. “This operation is a testament to what can be achieved through unified action and unrelenting determination to safeguard our people,” the Coast Guard said in a statement.

This commendable joint effort not only prevented a grave violation of human dignity but also sent a strong message to trafficking syndicates that the government is relentless in pursuing justice and dismantling their illegal networks.
