MAITUM, SARANGANI PROVINCE — Two active members of the Philippine Navy tragically lost their lives during a recreational diving activity off the coast of Barangay Mindupok, Maitum, Sarangani Province on Monday afternoon, August 4, 2025.
According to an official statement from the Philippine Navy, the personnel were on official leave and engaged in a wellness break when the fatal incident occurred approximately 1.2 nautical miles from shore.
A retired Navy officer and a fellow diver, who were with the victims during the dive, reported the incident to the Maitum Municipal Police Station. Based on the initial investigation, the group was conducting a Recreational Site Diving Survey when the two victims were suddenly noticed to be missing underwater.
The companions immediately launched a search and retrieval operation using a motorized boat. Moments later, they found the two missing Navy men floating near the dive site. Both were rushed to the nearest medical facility but were declared dead on arrival.
Medical personnel suspect the two may have experienced shortness of breath underwater, which could have led to drowning.
The deceased were both assigned at the Philippine Navy base in Sangley Point, Cavite.
In its official statement, the Philippine Navy expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended its condolences to the bereaved families. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and assure them of our full support during this difficult time,” the statement read.
The Navy has launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the incident and is reviewing existing protocols on recreational and operational diving to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“As safety remains a top priority, the Philippine Navy is also reviewing and enhancing our protocols related to both recreational and operational diving activities,” the Navy added.
The names of the victims have not been officially released pending notification of their next of kin.
The Philippine Navy emphasized that full assistance is being provided to the families, while also honoring the service and dedication of the fallen sailors in line with its continuing mission to safeguard national security and regional maritime stability.
