Families Mourn Tragic Loss After Wedding Celebration Turns into Nightmare
Lebak, Sultan Kudarat – August 6, 2025 — What was meant to be a joyous return home from a wedding celebration ended in horror and heartbreak when a dump truck carrying dozens of passengers plunged into a ravine along Highway 70 in Barangay Christianuevo, Lebak, Wednesday afternoon.
Eight individuals were declared dead on arrival at the hospital, while at least 23 others sustained various injuries in one of the worst road tragedies to hit the area in recent years.
Authorities said the victims, all residents of Barangay Senditan in Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao del Norte, were onboard the dump truck after attending a wedding ceremony in Lebak. Their homeward journey turned fatal when the vehicle lost control and careened off a cliff.

Emergency responders from the local government, Philippine National Police, and Bureau of Fire Protection rushed to the scene, navigating the steep terrain to rescue survivors and retrieve the victims.
As of this writing, several of the injured remain in critical condition and are being treated in nearby hospitals.
An Outpouring of Grief
In both Barangay Senditan and Lebak, a cloud of grief hangs heavy. Families, neighbors, and community leaders gathered in mourning, trying to make sense of the sudden tragedy.
Local officials have pledged support to the victims’ families, while investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident. Preliminary findings suggest possible mechanical failure or overloading, though this has yet to be confirmed.
A Call for Safer Transport
Community members have raised concerns over the use of dump trucks and other non-passenger vehicles for group travel, especially in mountainous or hazardous routes like Highway 70.
“We lost entire families in a single afternoon,” one relative tearfully said. “This should never happen again.”
