CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — A 66-year-old woman was killed while a habal-habal driver was injured after unidentified gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire on them in Lower Sumpong, Barangay Indahag, Cagayan de Oro City on the evening of June 4, 2026.

The fatality was identified as Lilibeth Evasco Magsigay, 66, a resident of Habitat Phase 2, Sitio Lumboy, Barangay Indahag, and reportedly an employee in the Pueblo Business Park area. She sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

The injured victim was identified as Jesus Saay, 46, a habal-habal driver and resident of Scions, Canitoan, Cagayan de Oro City. He suffered a gunshot wound to his right arm during the attack.

According to initial police reports, Magsigay was riding as a passenger on Saay’s motorcycle along Lower Sumpong, Indahag Road at around 9 p.m. when two armed men on a motorcycle approached them and suddenly opened fire.

Saay told investigators that he heard three gunshots before realizing that both he and his passenger had been hit. Fearing for their lives, he intentionally dropped the motorcycle in an attempt to escape the attackers.

The suspects, described as wearing black jackets and face masks while riding a black motorcycle, immediately fled the scene after the shooting.

Saay also revealed that he believes the gunmen may have been trailing them from the terminal where Magsigay regularly boarded his motorcycle.

Responding police officers recovered four empty shell casings from the crime scene. Authorities have yet to determine the caliber of the firearm used in the attack.

Personnel from Police Station 2-Cogon, led by Station Commander PMaj. Peter Lascuña Tajor and Deputy Commander PCapt. Reynold Virtudazo Luspo, immediately launched a pursuit operation and secured the area for investigation.

The case is being investigated by Police Staff Sergeant Genesis Babanto.

Authorities have yet to establish the motive behind the shooting and are currently reviewing all possible angles, including whether the victim was specifically targeted by the assailants.

The death of Magsigay has added to growing concerns over riding-in-tandem attacks, a recurring form of gun violence that continues to challenge law enforcement efforts in urban areas.

As of this writing, police are conducting a manhunt operation and gathering additional evidence to identify and arrest the suspects responsible for the deadly attack.

Investigators are also appealing to witnesses and anyone with information that could help solve the case to coordinate with the nearest police station.

The shooting remains under active investigation.
