SUMISIP, Basilan — Authorities confiscated eight pieces of illegally cut Lawaan round logs during a joint law enforcement operation conducted in Sumisip, Basilan on Wednesday, June 17, as part of the provincial government’s intensified campaign against illegal logging and environmental degradation.

The operation was carried out at around 2:40 p.m. at the Sampinit Complex in Sitio Bohe Lasangen, Barangay Mahatalang, through a coordinated effort between the 32nd Infantry (DAREDEVIL) Battalion of the Philippine Army, the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Regional Mobile Force Battalion.

According to military officials, the operation stemmed from a report provided by a concerned citizen regarding the alleged hauling of illegally cut timber in the area. Acting swiftly on the information, troops from the 32nd Infantry Battalion, under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Gerwin T. Maghuyop, joined forces with personnel from the Sumisip Municipal Police Station headed by Police Captain Jakaria Muin and the 401st Bravo Company of RMFB 14-B led by Police Captain Franlin G. Amistoso.

Upon reaching the site, the joint operating team verified the report and discovered eight pieces of illegally cut Lawaan round logs. The timber was immediately documented and confiscated in accordance with existing environmental and forestry regulations.

Authorities said the seized logs were placed under the custody of the Headquarters of the 32nd Infantry Battalion pending proper disposition and coordination with the appropriate government agencies tasked with enforcing environmental laws.

The operation forms part of the Sagip Kalikasan Campaign of the Provincial Government of Basilan, which seeks to curb illegal logging activities and safeguard the province’s remaining forest resources.

Lt. Col. Maghuyop stressed the importance of protecting the environment and reaffirmed the military’s commitment to supporting local authorities in combating environmental crimes.

“Protecting our forests is part of protecting the future of Basilan. The 32IB will continue to support lawful efforts against illegal logging and other activities that threaten the environment, peace, and development of our communities,” Maghuyop said.

Illegal logging remains a significant concern in several parts of the country due to its adverse effects on the environment, including deforestation, soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and increased vulnerability to flooding and landslides.

Military officials emphasized that the successful operation highlights the importance of cooperation among local communities, law enforcement agencies, and government stakeholders in preserving natural resources and promoting sustainable development.

The 32nd Infantry Battalion reiterated its commitment to supporting environmental protection initiatives, law enforcement operations, and programs aimed at fostering lasting peace and development across Basilan Province.

Authorities are continuing efforts to identify individuals responsible for the illegal cutting and transport of the confiscated timber and are expected to pursue appropriate legal action against those found violating environmental laws.
