SUMISIP, BASILAN — A multi-agency joint operation led by Basilan Governor Mujiv Hataman resulted in the seizure of illegally cut Lawaan logs in Sitio Sampinit, Barangay Mahatalang, Sumisip, on the evening of January 17, 2026.

The operation, conducted at around 8:00 p.m., was part of the Provincial Government of Basilan’s intensified environmental protection drive under the SAGIP KALIKASAN advocacy, which aims to curb illegal logging and other ecological violations threatening the province’s forest resources.
Personnel from the 32nd Infantry “Daredevil” Battalion of the 11th Infantry (ALAKDAN) Division, Philippine Army, played a key role in the operation, working alongside the Sumisip Municipal Police Station, the Local Government Unit of Sumisip, and local environmental management offices.
The military contingent was led by LTC Gerwin T. Maghuyop, Commanding Officer of the 32nd Infantry Battalion, with operational support from Executive Officer MAJ Jimhar S. Asanul.
Governor Hataman said the operation reflects the province’s firm stance against activities that endanger Basilan’s natural heritage. “Our SAGIP KALIKASAN campaign is about more than enforcement—it is about securing a sustainable future for Basilan’s people. We will not allow illegal activities to destroy our forests, which are vital to our economy, climate resilience, and way of life,” he stressed.
The confiscated Lawaan logs were immediately secured and placed under temporary safekeeping at the 32nd Infantry Battalion headquarters. Authorities have coordinated with the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy (MENRE)–Sumisip and the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office – Maluso for proper documentation, inventory, and disposition in accordance with existing environmental laws and regulations.
Military officials said the successful operation highlights the strength of collaboration among the provincial government, the Philippine Army, the Philippine National Police, local government units, and environmental agencies in enforcing environmental laws and protecting forest resources.
“The 32nd Infantry ‘Daredevil’ Battalion is proud to support the Provincial Government’s mission to safeguard Basilan’s resources,” LTC Maghuyop said. “We remain committed to assisting initiatives that uphold the rule of law and promote lasting peace and sustainable development in the province.”
Provincial authorities vowed to sustain intensified operations against illegal logging and other environmental crimes as part of broader efforts to preserve Basilan’s forests for future generations.
