DAVAO CITY — The Philippine sports community is in mourning following the tragic death of Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia, the 2025 Palarong Pambansa Most Valuable Player (MVP) and one of the country’s most promising young basketball stars.

Baterbonia, 18, died after drowning during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora on Monday, June 8. The heartbreaking incident was confirmed by Ateneo de Manila University, where the talented athlete had recently begun pursuing his collegiate basketball career with the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

Also reported dead in the incident was fellow student-athlete Divine Adili.

The sudden loss has sent shockwaves across the basketball community, particularly among athletes, coaches, and supporters who had witnessed Baterbonia’s remarkable rise from humble beginnings to national prominence.

Just days before the tragedy, Baterbonia had traveled to Manila on June 4 to officially continue his basketball journey with Ateneo de Manila University. He had also recently represented the Davao Region in the 2026 Palarong Pambansa held in Agusan del Sur, helping his team secure a silver medal finish.

His passing comes barely a week after he shared a heartfelt message on social media reflecting on his Palarong Pambansa journey.

“From dreams and sacrifices to unforgettable memories, my Palarong Pambansa journey has been one of the greatest chapters of my life,” Baterbonia wrote on May 31.

“Representing Davao Region on the national stage was an honor that I will always carry with pride. This journey was never just about medals—it was about growth, friendships, lessons, and the people I met along the way.”

He ended the post with a poignant farewell:

“This is Rene Clert Baterbonia, Jersey #2 of the DAVRAA Eagles, signing off. Thank you for everything.”

The message has since gone viral, with many netizens describing it as a heartbreaking final tribute to a young life cut short too soon.

From Fish Vendor’s Son to National MVP

Beyond his accomplishments on the court, Baterbonia’s story inspired many Filipinos because of his perseverance and dedication to family.

Born and raised in Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, Baterbonia came from a family that struggled financially. His parents, Rubilyn and Rene Baterbonia, earned a living by selling fish in the local market to support their seven children.

Despite his growing success in basketball, he never forgot his roots.

Friends and family shared that whenever he earned money from basketball tournaments, he would give approximately 80 percent of his earnings to his parents to help support the family.

Standing 6-foot-3, Baterbonia became a household name during the 2025 Palarong Pambansa after leading his team to a championship victory. His dominant performances earned him the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award and established him as one of the country’s brightest young basketball prospects.

Interestingly, basketball was not his first sport. He initially played soccer before shifting his focus to basketball at the age of 15, where his talent quickly flourished.

His basketball success eventually opened the door to a collegiate scholarship at Ateneo de Manila University, a milestone he viewed as another step toward achieving his dream of lifting his family out of poverty.

One of his greatest aspirations was to someday establish a business for his parents so they would no longer need to sell fish in the market and could enjoy a more comfortable life.

Outpouring of Grief

Following the confirmation of his death, tributes poured in from fellow athletes, coaches, sports organizations, classmates, and supporters.

Many remembered Baterbonia not only as an exceptional athlete but also as a humble, disciplined, and family-oriented young man whose determination inspired countless aspiring players across Mindanao and the country.

As his family, teammates, and loved ones grieve his untimely passing, the nation remembers a young athlete whose life embodied hard work, sacrifice, and hope.

Though his promising basketball career ended far too soon, Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond trophies and awards—a legacy of resilience, humility, and unwavering love for family.

Fly high, MVP. 🕊️🏀
