MARAMAG, Bukidnon — A 47-year-old man was fatally stabbed after confronting a suspected pickpocket during a wake in Purok 8, Barangay Camp 1, in the early hours of April 30, 2026, authorities said.

According to initial police investigation, the incident occurred at around 1:00 a.m. while the victim was attending a vigil and playing cards with other mourners. Reports indicate that the suspect allegedly stole the victim’s wallet, prompting the victim to confront him.
The confrontation quickly escalated when the suspect suddenly pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim in the right side of his chest. The assailant then fled the scene, heading toward an unknown direction.
The victim was immediately rushed to the Bukidnon Provincial Hospital in Maramag but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician due to the severity of the stab wound.
Authorities described the suspect as a male of medium build, approximately 5’6” in height, and wearing a blue T-shirt at the time of the incident. He was last reportedly seen fleeing toward the NAPOCOR area in Camp 1.
A hot pursuit operation is ongoing, led by the Maramag Municipal Police Station in coordination with barangay officials and Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPAT) members, to locate and apprehend the suspect.
Police are appealing to the public for any information that may help identify and arrest the suspect as the investigation continues.
The incident has alarmed residents, highlighting concerns over security even in traditionally solemn and communal gatherings such as wakes. Authorities assured that intensified efforts are underway to bring the perpetrator to justice.
