DINAS, Zamboanga del Sur — A hostage-taking incident involving a minor ended in the death of a suspect after he was shot by police following a tense standoff in Purok 6, Barangay Legarda 3, on the morning of April 9, 2026.

According to a report from the Dinas Municipal Police Station, the suspect—an uncle of the victim—held his own niece, a female student, at knifepoint at around 7:10 a.m., triggering an immediate response from law enforcement authorities.
Police swiftly established a perimeter to secure the area and prevent harm to nearby residents, while negotiators, assisted by personnel from the 2nd Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Mobile Force Company, engaged the suspect in an effort to peacefully resolve the situation.
After nearly an hour of negotiation, the victim managed to escape when the suspect momentarily relinquished one of his bladed weapons. However, the situation escalated moments later when the suspect suddenly drew another weapon and attempted to attack the fleeing victim as she ran toward responding officers.
Authorities said the suspect then turned his aggression toward the police, striking one officer multiple times. Faced with an imminent threat, a responding officer was forced to discharge his service firearm, hitting the suspect and neutralizing him.
Investigators also revealed that the suspect had inflicted injuries upon himself during the incident, including stabbing his own chest. The victim later confirmed that her uncle had already been wounded prior to attacking her and the police.
The suspect was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician due to severe blood loss.
The victim, meanwhile, was safely rescued and did not sustain any physical injuries.
Initial findings suggest that the incident may have stemmed from a heated argument between the suspect and the victim, although authorities have yet to determine the exact motive.
In a statement, Zamboanga del Sur Police Provincial Office Director Police Colonel Bonifacio B. Arañas Jr. commended the responding personnel for their discipline and professionalism in handling the high-risk situation.
“The successful handling of this hostage-taking incident, which resulted in the safe rescue of the victim, is a manifestation of the discipline and professionalism of our personnel,” Arañas said. “Their swift and decisive actions prevented further harm and ensured the preservation of life.”
He added that the police remain committed to maintaining peace and order in the province and ensuring public safety at all times.
The body of the suspect has been turned over to his family, while a full investigation is ongoing to establish all circumstances surrounding the incident.
