MALAPATAN, Sarangani Province – A domestic dispute turned violent and deadly after a man was shot and killed by his nephew following a hacking spree that left three individuals seriously injured in Purok Takol, Barangay Kinam.
Police identified the fatality as Tony Yata, also referred to in initial reports as Tonray Matagal, a resident of the area. The suspect-turned-victim allegedly attacked his wife and two other relatives with a bladed weapon before being shot by his nephew, identified as alias Ronald or Duroy Maguan, who is now under police custody.
According to initial police investigations and statements from Barangay Kinam Kagawad Toning Maguan, the incident stemmed from a confrontation between the suspect and his wife, Mondeth Maguan. The wife reportedly confronted her husband over allegations that he had been involved in poisoning incidents within their community.
Authorities said the suspect became enraged during the confrontation and suddenly hacked his wife multiple times, inflicting serious injuries. Responding to the commotion, the victim’s brother, Guantino Maguan, and another relative, Ding Taluno, attempted to intervene but were also attacked and sustained multiple hack wounds.
As the situation escalated, Duroy Maguan, son of one of the injured victims, was forced to act. In an attempt to stop the suspect and prevent further bloodshed, he used a 12-gauge shotgun and fired at the attacker, hitting him in the chest. The suspect died instantly from the gunshot wound.
The three injured victims—identified as Mondeth Maguan, Guantino Maguan, and Ding Taluno—were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and are currently undergoing treatment for multiple hacking injuries.
Meanwhile, Duroy Maguan is currently detained at the Malapatan Municipal Police Station. Authorities are awaiting the decision of the slain suspect’s family on whether they will pursue charges, as investigators continue to determine whether the shooting falls under self-defense.
Police emphasized that a thorough and ongoing investigation is being conducted to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including the alleged poisoning accusations that may have triggered the violent outburst.
The incident underscores the deadly consequences of unresolved domestic conflicts, particularly when compounded by suspicion and heightened emotions, leaving one dead and several others fighting for their lives.
