DAPITAN CITY, Zamboanga del Norte — An engineer working under the City Engineering Office of Dapitan City died after falling into a deep ravine while descending Mt. Lab in Barangay Sto. Niño on the morning of April 3, Good Friday.

The victim, a Job Order personnel assigned to the Planning Division, was part of a group of young hikers who climbed the mountain earlier that day. Mt. Lab is known for its scenic views but also for its steep and dangerous terrain.
According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), the incident occurred at around 8:19 a.m. while the victim and a companion were making their way down a narrow and challenging trail. Authorities said the victim lost his balance and plunged approximately 200 meters into a cliff lined with rocks and thick cogon grass.
The mountain features steep drop-offs on both sides, often concealed by vegetation, making it hazardous even for experienced climbers. Strong gusts of wind, which are common in the area, may have contributed to the accident.
Rescue teams from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), including personnel from the Taguilon Fire Sub-Station and the Zamboanga del Norte Special Rescue Force, responded along with the Dapitan City Police Station and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO).
Due to the difficult terrain, responders conducted a complex retrieval operation using a mechanical advantage system and a basket stretcher. The operation required careful coordination and took time to complete safely.
The victim was eventually retrieved and rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival due to severe injuries.
In a statement, the Dapitan City government expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the victim’s family. The local government also assured assistance, including psychosocial support.
Authorities have temporarily closed the Mt. Lab hiking trail until further notice due to safety concerns and ongoing investigation.
Officials also urged the public to refrain from sharing graphic images or videos related to the incident out of respect for the victim and his family.
Mt. Lab remains a popular destination due to its panoramic views, but authorities reminded the public to exercise extreme caution and follow safety protocols when trekking in high-risk areas.
