DUMINGAG, Zamboanga del Sur — A suspected chicken thief was injured after being accidentally shot by his own firearm while attempting to flee from pursuing residents on the morning of April 1, 2026, in Barangay Upper Timonan.

Initial reports revealed that two men, identified only by their aliases “Romano” and “Marmar,” allegedly stole chickens from a resident in Purok 7. The theft was quickly discovered, prompting the owner to chase the suspects as they tried to escape.

The suspects fled on a motorcycle, but the pursuit ended in an accident in New Basak, Barangay Lower Landing, where their vehicle reportedly lost control and crashed.

Amid the commotion, the firearm carried by “Romano” accidentally discharged, hitting him in the leg. He sustained injuries but survived the incident.

His companion, “Marmar,” was immediately apprehended at the scene, while authorities responded to secure the area and take custody of the suspects.

Police are continuing their investigation, including verifying the ownership and legality of the firearm used in the incident. Charges related to theft and possible illegal possession of a firearm are being prepared against the suspects.

The incident underscores the dangers tied to criminal activity and the risks posed by unregulated firearms, even in cases involving minor theft. Authorities are once again urging the public to report crimes promptly and allow law enforcement agencies to handle such situations to prevent further harm.
