T’boli, South Cotabato — Government troops killed a top-ranking communist rebel leader and a female combatant in a decisive military operation on Wednesday, April 9, coinciding with the observance of Araw ng Kagitingan, the military reported.

Operating units of the 603rd Infantry (Persuader) Brigade neutralized Anthony Narvasa, also known as “Magaw,” identified as the Secretary of the Far South Mindanao Region (FSMR) of the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG), during an encounter in Barangay Laconon, T’boli town.

Narvasa’s death marks the third time the brigade has eliminated a regional secretary of the FSMR in just over four years. Prior to Narvasa, the military reported the neutralization of aliases “Bobo” in December 2022 and “Rafa” or “Ruby” in June 2025. The FSMR had reportedly appointed Narvasa to the position in late 2025 in an effort to sustain its leadership structure, but he was killed just three months into the role.

Military officials described Narvasa as a “notorious” rebel figure facing multiple criminal charges, including murder and attempted homicide. Authorities said his death delivers a significant blow to the CTG’s command and operational capability in the region.

Also killed in the operation was Rosa Kian, alias “Mutya” or “Roxanne,” a member of Team 1, Squad 2 of the Regional Operations Command (ROC) under FSMR.

Troops recovered four M16 rifles and one R4 rifle from the encounter site. No casualties were reported on the side of government forces.

Brigade Commander Brig. Gen. Michael A. Santos lauded the troops for what he described as a “decisive and courageous” operation, emphasizing its significance as it coincided with Araw ng Kagitingan, a national holiday honoring Filipino valor.

“This significant accomplishment is our gift to the people of South Cotabato. A CTG leader neutralized means a lot more to communities living under the fear of terrorism, extortion, and threats,” Santos said.

The remains of the slain rebels are currently in the custody of operating troops and will be processed in accordance with established protocols, the military added.

The Armed Forces maintained that the operation underscores its continuing efforts to dismantle insurgent leadership structures and secure vulnerable communities in Mindanao.

“With this successful operation, the Persuader Troopers reaffirm their commitment to protecting the people, upholding peace, and ensuring security on the ground,” the military said.

The clash highlights the government’s intensified counterinsurgency campaign, with officials asserting that sustained operations have weakened the CTG’s regional networks and disrupted its leadership ranks.
