Bayang, Lanao del Sur — In a bid to reinforce peacebuilding efforts and deepen collaboration between the military and local governments, the 64th Infantry “Knights” Battalion convened a Mayors’ Forum on March 30, 2026, bringing together key leaders to address pressing security and governance concerns across the province.

Held at the battalion headquarters in Barangay Liong, the forum served as a strategic platform for open dialogue between municipal mayors, local government officials, and military leaders operating within Lanao del Sur. The initiative underscored the importance of unified action in tackling long-standing issues such as rido or clan feuds, which continue to pose challenges to peace and stability in parts of the region.

Lieutenant Colonel Jerry B. Gaviola, commander of the 64th Infantry Battalion, emphasized the critical role of cooperation and shared responsibility among stakeholders. He highlighted that sustainable peace can only be achieved through consistent engagement, mutual trust, and proactive coordination between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and local government units (LGUs).

“The strength of our communities lies in our ability to work together,” Gaviola said, stressing that addressing security concerns requires not only military intervention but also strong governance and grassroots participation.

Participants exchanged insights and best practices aimed at improving governance, mitigating conflicts, and advancing development initiatives. The forum also provided an avenue for mayors to raise local concerns, identify gaps in coordination, and explore innovative approaches to maintaining peace and order.

Local chief executives welcomed the initiative, noting that direct engagement with military leadership enhances their capacity to respond to emerging threats while promoting transparency and accountability in governance.

The gathering reflected a growing recognition that peacebuilding in Lanao del Sur goes beyond security operations, requiring a whole-of-government approach anchored in collaboration, cultural sensitivity, and community empowerment.

As the province continues to navigate complex social dynamics, the Mayors’ Forum stands as a testament to the 64th Infantry Battalion’s commitment to fostering partnerships that support LGU-led initiatives and sustain long-term development.

With strengthened ties between the military and local leaders, stakeholders expressed optimism that such collaborative efforts will pave the way for more resilient and peaceful communities across Lanao del Sur.
