DAVAO CITY — Authorities on Thursday presented an estimated ₱156.4 million worth of smuggled cigarettes confiscated from two warehouses here, marking one of the largest anti-smuggling operations recorded so far this year.

During a press briefing, Ariel F. Nepomuceno, Commissioner of the Bureau of Customs (BOC), said a total of 182,821 reams of assorted cigarette brands were discovered during separate inspections of storage facilities operating without the necessary import permits.
The seized goods were valued at ₱156,436,273.28, underscoring the scale of illicit tobacco trade still plaguing key urban centers in Mindanao.
“This is a significant accomplishment in our intensified campaign against smuggling,” Nepomuceno said, noting that the operation reflects improved coordination among enforcement units and intelligence networks.
Authorities have yet to trace the exact origin of the shipment. However, Nepomuceno pointed out that based on historical data and previous interdictions, similar contraband products are often sourced from neighboring Southeast Asian countries, including Cambodia, Malaysia, and Vietnam.
The discovery highlights persistent challenges in curbing the entry and distribution of untaxed tobacco products, which not only deprive the government of significant revenue but also undermine legitimate businesses and public health regulations.
Customs officials said further investigations are underway to identify those behind the illegal importation and distribution network. Possible charges are being prepared against individuals involved, in violation of customs and tax laws.
The BOC reiterated its commitment to intensify border protection and inland enforcement operations, particularly in high-risk areas, as part of a broader crackdown on smuggling activities across the country.
