DATU PIANG, Maguindanao del Sur — Violence linked to escalating clan conflict has claimed yet another young victim in the Bangsamoro region, after a Grade 8 student was struck by a stray bullet during a firefight between two armed groups in the Special Geographic Area (SGA) of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

The victim, a teenage boy enrolled at Gani L. Abpi College Inc. (GLACI) in Datu Piang, was reportedly caught in the crossfire as gunmen from rival groups exchanged gunfire in the area. The incident occurred amid continuing hostilities believed to be connected to a rido, or clan feud, which has been intensifying in recent days.

Details about the boy’s condition and the exact circumstances of the shooting remain unclear as of this writing. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the identities of those involved and the sequence of events that led to the tragedy.

Local residents said the shooting has heightened fear among communities already on edge as the Muslim world observes the holy month of Ramadan, a time traditionally devoted to prayer, reflection, and peace.

Instead, families in parts of the SGA area have been forced to take cover from sporadic gunfire as the feud between rival groups escalates.

The incident drew public outrage online after a local resident, Zul-amin Mustapha Esmail, shared the news on social media, calling for an immediate end to the violence.

Allahu Akbar. A Grade 8 student studying at GLACI was hit by a stray bullet. Stop the war, please. Help us, BARMM government and the national government,” Esmail wrote in a post expressing grief and frustration over the continuing bloodshed.

Esmail also pointed out that the Grade 8 student is already the third student victim of violence linked to the ongoing conflict in recent days.

According to the post, a kindergarten pupil from Damabalas Elementary School and a Grade 12 student who was reportedly killed a day earlier had also fallen victim to the violence.

The string of incidents has alarmed community members and education advocates who fear that the intensifying rido is putting children and students directly in harm’s way.

Residents have appealed for immediate intervention from the BARMM government and national authorities, urging them to deploy peace mechanisms and security forces to stop the fighting before more innocent lives are lost.

Authorities have reminded the public to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activities or armed movements in their communities.

However, for many residents, the situation underscores the enduring danger posed by clan feuds in parts of Mindanao, where disputes between families or factions can quickly escalate into armed confrontations that spill into civilian areas.

Community leaders and peace advocates are now calling for urgent mediation efforts to de-escalate tensions, especially during Ramadan, when violence is widely seen as a grave violation of the spiritual significance of the holy month.

As investigations continue, the tragedy of yet another young life caught in the crossfire has deepened calls for stronger intervention to end the cycle of retaliatory violence in the region.
