DATU PIANG, Maguindanao del Sur — Tension gripped a remote village in Datu Piang on Saturday morning, April 4, after an armed confrontation involving a local commander’s group triggered panic, forced civilian evacuations, and prompted heightened security operations in the area.
According to initial reports from authorities, the incident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. in Sitio Tamboa, Barangay Masigay, when the group of a certain Commander Cob Silongan came under fire while en route to visit a supposed witness linked to the recent discovery of a Malaysian national’s body in the locality.
Police said the group, traveling in at least one white minivan, was approaching the residence of the alleged witness when unidentified armed men opened fire, sparking a brief but intense exchange of gunfire. The situation quickly escalated into a firefight between two groups, reportedly involving forces linked to Commander Silongan and another faction.
Separate accounts from residents and local radio reports indicated that at least two minivans were targeted in the shooting. Despite the volume of gunfire, authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries were recorded among the estimated ten افراد onboard the vehicles.
The Datu Piang Municipal Police Station (MPS) said it received a distress call from the barangay chairperson of Masigay, prompting an immediate response from its alert team. Upon arrival, law enforcement personnel confirmed multiple bullet impacts on the vehicles used by the commander’s group.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but investigators are looking into possible links between the ambush and the ongoing probe into the unidentified Malaysian national found dead in the area days earlier. Authorities have yet to identify the gunmen involved.
The incident sowed fear among residents, forcing several families to flee their homes to avoid being caught in the crossfire. Displaced individuals sought temporary shelter in evacuation centers in nearby barangays, while others stayed with relatives.
Local officials said the number of affected residents has yet to be determined, but warned that displacement could increase if tensions persist.
In response, security forces composed of police and military units have intensified checkpoint operations and launched interventions aimed at preventing further violence and restoring order.
