DATU PIANG, Maguindanao del Sur — A kindergarten pupil was tragically killed after being struck by a stray bullet inside her classroom at Damalabas Elementary School in Barangay Damalabas, Datu Piang, amid ongoing armed clashes between rival groups in nearby areas.

The victim was identified as Bai Farhadin Lutia, a young learner who was reportedly attending her class when the fatal shooting occurred. According to authorities and witnesses, the child was hit in the head after gunshots rang out from outside the school premises.

Initial investigations indicate that the bullet likely originated from an armed confrontation between groups from Barangay Olandang and Barangay Nabalawag, part of the Special Geographic Area (SGA) of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). The exchange of gunfire reportedly spilled over into surrounding communities, putting innocent civilians—especially children—directly in harm’s way.

Killed in a Place Meant for Safety

The incident occurred while pupils were inside their classrooms, engaged in regular school activities. Teachers and students were caught off guard when a gunshot pierced through the school compound, fatally wounding the young victim.

School officials immediately rushed the child to a nearby medical facility, but she was declared dead on arrival due to a severe head injury.

Parents and residents expressed shock and grief, questioning how violence could reach a place meant to be a sanctuary for learning and protection.

“This is supposed to be a safe space for our children,” a grieving parent said. “No child should die because of senseless fighting.”

Reckless Armed Conflict Condemned

Local leaders, educators, and civil society groups strongly condemned the reckless and irresponsible use of firearms that led to the child’s death.

Human rights advocates described the incident as a “clear violation of children’s rights,” emphasizing that armed groups have once again demonstrated a blatant disregard for civilian lives.

“This tragedy reflects the cruel consequences of lawlessness and unchecked armed conflict,” said a community leader. “The death of a child inside a classroom is unacceptable and unforgivable.”

Residents criticized armed groups for turning residential areas into battlegrounds, exposing families, students, and teachers to extreme danger.

Family Demands Justice, Security

The family of Bai Farhadin Lutia is calling for justice and accountability, urging authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible for the deadly gunfire.

They also appealed for stronger security measures around schools and residential communities, fearing that similar incidents could happen again if violence is not decisively addressed.

“We want justice for our child,” a family member said. “No other family should experience this pain.”

Authorities Launch Investigation

The Datu Piang Municipal Police Station confirmed that a full investigation is underway to determine the exact source of the gunfire and the individuals involved in the armed clash.

Police are coordinating with military units and BARMM security forces to trace ballistic evidence and gather witness accounts. Authorities vowed to pursue criminal charges against those found responsible.

Officials also pledged to intensify patrols and security operations in conflict-prone areas, particularly near schools.

A Call to End Violence

The killing of a kindergarten pupil has reignited calls for stronger enforcement of peace and security measures in Maguindanao del Sur and other conflict-affected areas in Mindanao.

Educators and child welfare advocates stressed that children should never become casualties of political rivalries, territorial disputes, or power struggles.

“This tragedy must serve as a wake-up call,” an education official said. “If armed violence continues, more innocent lives will be lost.”

As the community mourns the loss of Bai Farhadin Lutia, many are demanding not only justice—but lasting peace, accountability, and an end to the culture of violence that continues to rob children of their future.
