LANAO DEL SUR — Operatives of the Police Regional Office–Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR) seized more than ₱427,000 worth of smuggled cigarettes and arrested a suspect during a checkpoint operation in Picong, Lanao del Sur on February 3, 2026.

Authorities intercepted a Suzuki Multicab at a checkpoint in Barangay Tual after its driver hesitated to stop, raising suspicion among law enforcers. The vehicle was subjected to a routine inspection in accordance with Philippine National Police (PNP) standard operating procedures.

During the inspection, police discovered 250 reams of assorted smuggled cigarettes in plain view inside the vehicle. The contraband was estimated to be worth ₱427,840.

The driver, identified only by the alias “Rayyan,” a resident of Makilala, North Cotabato, was immediately arrested and placed under police custody. He is now facing possible charges for violating customs and anti-smuggling laws.

Police said the seized cigarettes will be turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper documentation, investigation, and disposal in line with existing regulations.

Police Brigadier General Jaysen C. de Guzman, Regional Director of PRO-BAR, lauded the operating personnel for their vigilance and swift action, saying the successful operation demonstrates the police force’s strong commitment to curbing illegal trade in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region.

“This operation reflects our firm resolve to suppress smuggling activities, protect the region’s economy, and uphold the rule of law,” de Guzman said in a statement.

Authorities stressed that smuggling not only deprives the government of much-needed revenue but also undermines legitimate businesses and fuels other criminal activities.

PRO-BAR assured the public that checkpoint operations and intelligence-driven enforcement efforts will be intensified to prevent the entry and distribution of illegal goods in the region.
