PICONG, Lanao del Sur — Police forces manning an anti-criminality checkpoint in Barangay Miculabo, Picong, Lanao del Sur intercepted and confiscated more than ₱6 million worth of smuggled cigarettes during an early morning operation on February 5, 2026.

Joint operatives from the Lanao del Sur Police Provincial Office, in coordination with the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group–Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (CIDG-BAR) Lanao del Sur and the Bureau of Customs–Port of Iligan, flagged down an Isuzu Forward truck for routine inspection.
Authorities said the team became suspicious after noticing irregularities in the vehicle’s structure. A thorough search revealed hidden compartments containing 141 master cases, or 7,050 reams, of Cannon Black Menthol cigarettes allegedly smuggled into the country.
The shipment was found to be in violation of Republic Act No. 10863, also known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act, and Republic Act No. 10643, or the Anti-Smuggling Act of 2016.
Two individuals were arrested in connection with the incident and are now facing possible criminal charges. The confiscated cigarettes and the truck used in transporting the contraband were placed under police custody and will be turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition and further investigation.
Police officials said the seizure highlights the continuing efforts of law enforcement agencies to curb the illegal trade of untaxed and smuggled goods, which deprives the government of millions of pesos in revenue and undermines legitimate businesses.
PBGEN Jaysen C. De Guzman, Regional Director of Police Regional Office Bangsamoro (PRO BAR), commended the operating units for their vigilance and professionalism during the operation.
“This successful interdiction reflects the firm resolve of the Philippine National Police to protect the economy and uphold the rule of law,” De Guzman said, lauding the troops for their unwavering commitment to safeguarding the region from smuggling and other transnational crimes.
Authorities assured the public that intensified checkpoint operations and intelligence-driven activities will continue across the Bangsamoro region as part of broader efforts to combat organized criminal networks and strengthen border and trade security.
