LAKE SEBU, South Cotabato — A 59-year-old fisherman was found dead in the waters of Lake Sebu early Wednesday morning, February 4, 2026, after reportedly falling from his boat while returning home from a drinking session.

Authorities identified the victim as alias “Hando,” a resident of Sitio Odi, Barangay Bacdulong, Lake Sebu.

According to Lake Sebu Police Chief Lt. Col. Bernie Faldas, the victim had been drinking with relatives before heading home aboard a small fishing boat. Due to his intoxicated state, he allegedly lost his balance, fell into the lake, and drowned.

The victim’s body was discovered at around 6:00 a.m. by a fellow fisherman who was tending to his fish cage in the area. The incident was immediately reported to local authorities, who conducted a preliminary investigation.

Police said there were no indications of foul play, and initial findings point to accidental drowning as the cause of death.

Lt. Col. Faldas noted that this was not an isolated case, recalling that a similar drowning incident linked to alcohol intoxication was recorded in January this year.

Local authorities have once again urged residents, especially fishermen and boat operators, to avoid traveling on the lake while under the influence of alcohol, stressing that intoxication significantly increases the risk of accidents and fatalities.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns over safety in Lake Sebu, particularly during nighttime and early morning hours, and underscores the need for stronger community awareness and preventive measures to avert similar tragedies.
