SULTAN KUDARAT, Philippines — Provincial health authorities are investigating the death of a two-year-old girl in Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat, following her recent Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccination, as officials stressed that no confirmed link between the vaccine and the child’s death has been established.

The Provincial Health Office (PHO) of Sultan Kudarat confirmed that the incident occurred on February 4, 2026, after the child reportedly received an MR vaccine as part of the government’s ongoing Supplemental Immunization Activity (MR-SIA).

In an advisory, the PHO said the Regional, Provincial, and Municipal Epidemiology Units are conducting a thorough investigation in accordance with standard health protocols to determine the exact cause of death.

“At this time, there is no definitive evidence that the vaccine caused the child’s passing,” the PHO said, adding that all possible medical and environmental factors are being examined.

Family Raises Concerns

The child’s mother expressed concerns over a possible connection between the vaccination and her daughter’s sudden death. A post shared by the child’s grandmother on social media described how the child appeared healthy before receiving the injection, but later showed signs of distress.

“Kagahapong adlawa maayo pa kaayo akong apo, unya human gi-injection, nilahos ug luya ug nitirik ang mata,” the grandmother wrote, recounting the family’s grief and shock.

Health officials acknowledged the family’s concerns and emphasized that they are being taken seriously as part of the ongoing investigation.

PHO Defends Vaccine Safety

Despite the incident, the PHO reiterated that the MR vaccine is safe and effective, and has been used worldwide for decades to protect children from measles and rubella—both of which remain serious and potentially fatal diseases.

Officials warned against drawing conclusions before the completion of the investigation, noting that adverse health events following vaccination do not automatically indicate causation.

The MR-SIA campaign, which runs from January 19 to February 13, 2026, aims to prevent outbreaks of measles and rubella in the province and surrounding areas.

Support for the Family

The Local Government Unit of Palimbang has extended financial and psychosocial assistance to the bereaved family to help them cope with their loss.

“Our priority is to support the family during this painful time while ensuring that the truth behind this tragedy is established,” local officials said.

Call Against Misinformation

The PHO also appealed to the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and speculation on social media, warning that misinformation could undermine public confidence in health programs and put more children at risk.

Residents were urged to rely only on official statements from the Department of Health, the Provincial Health Office, and local government units.

Public Health Reminder

Health authorities continue to encourage parents to have their eligible children vaccinated, stressing that measles and rubella remain serious threats, especially in communities with low immunization coverage.

“The investigation is ongoing, and we ask the public for patience and understanding,” the PHO said. “Protecting the health and safety of our children remains our shared responsibility.”

Further updates will be released once the investigation is completed.
