COTABATO CITY — A suspected drug den operating in a remote island community in Tawi-Tawi was dismantled following a successful joint buy-bust operation conducted by law enforcement authorities on February 8, 2026, leading to the arrest of three individuals and the rescue of two others.

The operation was spearheaded by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Tawi-Tawi Provincial Office, in coordination with the Marine Battalion Landing Team–4 (MBLT-4), targeting a suspected drug distribution network operating in Barangay Tubig Indangan, Laa Island, in the municipality of Simunul.

Authorities identified the arrested suspects as alias Muhammad, alleged to be the maintainer of the drug den, along with his cohorts alias Erning and alias Ammil. The three were apprehended during the buy-bust operation and are currently detained at the Bongao Municipal Police Station while awaiting inquest proceedings for violations of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Seized from the suspects were four heat-sealed transparent plastic sachets and 25 plastic straws containing suspected Methamphetamine Hydrochloride, commonly known as shabu, with a total estimated weight of 15 grams. The illegal drugs were valued at approximately Php 183,600 based on standard market rates.

In addition to the suspected narcotics, operatives also recovered several non-drug items believed to have been used in the illegal drug trade. These included one .45 caliber pistol, an Android cellular phone, an identification card belonging to alias Muhammad, and various drug paraphernalia.

Law enforcement officials said the operation effectively dismantled a drug den that had reportedly been serving as a hub for illegal drug transactions in the area, posing serious threats to public safety, especially in geographically isolated island communities.

During the operation, authorities also rescued two individuals who were allegedly being exploited or held within the premises. The rescued persons will be turned over to the Municipal Social Services and Development (MSSD) Office and concerned barangay officials for proper care, assessment, and rehabilitation support.

Officials emphasized that the successful operation highlights the government’s intensified campaign against illegal drugs, particularly in vulnerable and hard-to-reach areas such as island barangays in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

They also reiterated their commitment to strengthen inter-agency coordination to suppress drug trafficking and dismantle criminal networks that threaten peace and development in the region.

Authorities urged community members to remain vigilant and to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities in their localities, stressing that public participation remains vital in sustaining peace and order.

Further investigation is ongoing to determine possible links of the suspects to larger drug trafficking syndicates operating in the region.
