The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) intensified its nationwide crackdown on loose firearms under OPLAN PAGLALANSAG OMEGA, leading to the arrest of an alleged gunrunner and the seizure of three unlicensed firearms in a law enforcement operation in Marawi City on February 16, 2026.

The operation, carried out at around 2:00 p.m. in Barangay Matampay, was conducted by the CIDG Cotabato City Field Unit and the Special Operations Team of the CIDG Regional Field Unit Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (BAR), in coordination with the Philippine National Police Special Action Force and local territorial police units.
Authorities confiscated a caliber 7.62 M14 rifle, a caliber .45 pistol, a caliber .40 pistol, along with assorted magazines and rounds of ammunition. A 56-year-old male suspect, identified by police as “Mario,” a resident of Barangay Palao, Bobong, Lanao del Sur, was arrested during the operation.
According to a report submitted to PMGen. Robert AA Morico II, Director of the CIDG, the suspect was caught in the act of possessing and allegedly selling the firearms without the necessary permit, license, or legal authority. His possession and attempted sale of the weapons rendered the firearms illegal under existing laws. Authorities further revealed that the suspect is allegedly engaged in gunrunning activities and has been operating within Marawi City and neighboring municipalities.
The intensified operation forms part of the focused program thrust of Jose Melencio C Nartatez Jr., Chief of the Philippine National Police, to sustain and strengthen the nationwide campaign against loose firearms. Under OPLAN PAGLALANSAG OMEGA, the CIDG has been aggressively targeting illegal firearm possession and trafficking networks in a bid to curb violence and prevent crimes linked to unregulated weapons.
CIDG leadership commended PLTCOL Niño Lope M. Briones, Regional Chief of the CIDG Regional Field Unit BAR, and the CIDG Cotabato City Field Unit headed by PLTCOL Eugene A. Balugo for the successful seizure and arrest. Officials described the operation as a significant blow to the circulation of illegal firearms in the Bangsamoro region.
Authorities emphasized that removing unlicensed firearms from the streets is a critical step in preventing crimes and neutralizing instruments of violence before they can be used in criminal or extremist activities. The confiscation, they said, demonstrates the unit’s firm resolve to dismantle illegal gun networks and ensure public safety.
The CIDG assured the public that it remains steadfast and unrelenting in enforcing all laws related to firearms and ammunition. With sustained operations across the country, the group reiterated its commitment to eliminating loose firearms and holding violators accountable, declaring that it will continue to intensify its campaign with full force and determination.
