OMAR, Sulu — In a decisive step toward lasting peace and public safety, the Municipality of Omar was officially declared a Gun-Free Municipality and Peace-Centered Community on January 29, 2026, underscoring the power of unified action among local leaders, citizens, and security forces.

The declaration, held at the Municipal Covered Court in Barangay Lahing-Lahing, was the result of a joint initiative led by the 11th Infantry “Alakdan” Division, through the 101st Infantry “Sajahitra” Battalion under the 1102nd Infantry “Ganarul” Brigade, in close partnership with the Local Government Unit of Omar and the Sulu Police Provincial Office. The milestone marks a significant breakthrough in Omar’s long-standing efforts to strengthen peace and security in the municipality.

Formalized through a municipal resolution read by Vice Mayor Hon. Juddin Nur Pantasan, the declaration affirms Omar’s collective commitment to maintaining order, safeguarding communities, and fostering an environment where peace is actively protected.

The ceremony was attended by top military and local officials, including Maj. Gen. Leonardo I. Peña, Commander of the 11th Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Orion; Brig. Gen. Alaric Avelino P. Delos Santos, Commander of the 1102nd Infantry Brigade; and Lt. Col. Dante E. Mantes, Commanding Officer of the 101st Infantry Battalion. They were joined by municipal and barangay officials, religious leaders, and peace partners, highlighting the broad-based support behind the initiative.

In his message, Mayor Hon. Abdulbaki Ajibon expressed gratitude to barangay leaders and security forces for their unity and unwavering support, emphasizing that sustained dialogue, trust-building, and cooperation were instrumental in achieving the declaration. He also lauded the 101st Infantry Battalion for its consistent community engagement, which he said helped lay the groundwork for peace.

Brig. Gen. Delos Santos stressed that the milestone was ultimately driven by the people’s willingness to embrace peace, noting that security initiatives can only succeed when communities themselves take ownership of safety and order.

Echoing this, Maj. Gen. Peña commended the collective efforts that led to the declaration, underscoring that choosing peace is vital to progress and long-term stability. He urged all stakeholders to remain vigilant in protecting the gains achieved, not only for the present but for future generations.

A poignant highlight of the event was the ceremonial presentation of previously surrendered firearms, a powerful symbol of the community’s firm resolve to keep Omar free from violence and fear.

The declaration of Omar as a gun-free, peace-centered community stands as a compelling testament to what can be achieved when citizens, local government, and security forces work hand in hand—setting a strong example for other communities striving to build a safer, more resilient, and peaceful future.
