DUMINGAG, Zamboanga del Sur — A farmer-turned-small-scale miner died while another was injured after an abandoned tunnel collapsed in Barangay Licabang on Saturday afternoon, December 27, 2025.

The fatality was identified as Eddie Tunggian, 44, a resident of Purok 4 of the same barangay. According to the investigation, he was inside the tunnel at Purok 5 along with companions when the soil suddenly caved in, burying him alive.

Rescuers, including fellow miners and police personnel, immediately attempted to save Tunggian, but he was declared dead before he could be retrieved. His remains were later brought home to his grieving family, who received him with deep sorrow.

One of Tunggian’s co-workers survived the incident and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Authorities said it was only Tunggian’s third day working in the area, and the tragic incident came unexpectedly for his family.

LGU Dumingag: Area was Previously Shut Down

In a statement, the Local Government of Dumingag confirmed that the accident occurred inside an abandoned mining tunnel previously ordered closed due to illegal mining activities.

A Cease and Desist Order had been issued earlier in coordination with barangay officials, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), and the Philippine National Police (PNP).

The LGU stressed that access to the site remains prohibited due to hazardous conditions, aggravated by road damage and heavy rains. Despite multiple warnings, some individuals allegedly continued to enter the restricted area to mine.

“Despite our interventions, there are still those who risk their lives by going to closed mining areas,” the LGU noted, expressing condolences to the bereaved family.

Investigation Underway

Police and local officials are conducting further investigation to determine liability and prevent similar incidents. Authorities remind the public to follow safety protocols and respect closure orders to avoid future tragedies.

The community in Licabang continues to mourn the sudden loss of Tunggian, who leaves behind his family shortly after attempting to earn a living from mining for the first time.
