CAMP SANG-AN, ZDS — Government forces neutralized a key sub-leader of the Daulah Islamiyah–Maute Group (DI-MG), arrested two suspected members, and seized firearms and explosive devices following two armed encounters in Brgy. Padas, Pagayawan, Lanao del Sur on November 14–15, 2025.

Troops under the 1101st Infantry (Gagandilan) Brigade engaged an undetermined number of DI-MG members in two separate firefights early Saturday morning, resulting in the death of DI-MG sub-leader and Priority Suspect Registry (PSR) No. 2 Najib Laguindab alias “Abu Jihad.” He was identified as part of the group responsible for the Mindanao State University bombing in 2023.

Laguindab is the second Maute leader neutralized by government forces this month, leaving only two active DI-MG remnants still at large. Two other individuals believed to be linked to the terror group were also apprehended.

However, the military confirmed the loss of Corporal Mark John L. Duray (Inf) PA, a proud son of San Miguel, Surigao del Sur, who suffered critical injuries during the encounter and later died while being evacuated. His death marks a profound sacrifice in the continuing fight against violent extremism.

A Nation Mourns a Fallen Hero

The 1st Infantry Division extended its deepest condolences to the family of Cpl. Duray.

“We pay tribute to his unwavering courage, dedication, and selfless service to our country. He faced danger so others could live in safety and peace. May his sacrifice be forever etched in our hearts and in the history of our nation.”

To his grieving family, the unit expressed:

“May you find strength, comfort, and healing in this time of grief. You are in our thoughts and prayers.”

Recovered from the clash site were an M16 rifle, a .45-caliber pistol, and three improvised explosive devices (IEDs), believed to be intended for future attacks.

Brig. Gen. Yasser R. Bara, Commander of the 1101st Infantry Brigade, praised the troops for their swift and disciplined execution of the operation.

“I commend our troops for their actions that led to the neutralization of Abu Jihad and the capture of two individuals. We deeply honor the sacrifice of our fallen comrade, whose courage embodies the finest ideals of a soldier.”

Maj. Gen. Yegor Rey P. Barroquillo Jr., Commander of Joint Task Force Zampelan and the 1st Infantry Division, underscored the strategic significance of the operation.

“The death of Abu Jihad delivers a significant blow to the DI-MG remnants. Our soldier fought with discipline and valor. His sacrifice will not be in vain,” he said. “Despite this heartbreaking loss, we remain steadfast. The Tabak Division will continue to uphold peace, enforce the law, and protect our people from violent extremism.”

Security forces continue to pursue the remaining DI-MG members as part of intensified efforts to eliminate terrorist threats and secure lasting peace in Lanao del Sur.
