The Philippine Army’s Special Mission Aviation Company intensified the country’s maritime security efforts after successfully conducting a wide-range Maritime Air Patrol across Western Mindanao on November 21, 2025. The mission covered the Zamboanga Peninsula and the island provinces of Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi—areas long considered critical corridors for trade, travel, and security operations.

According to the Aviation Regiment, the patrol forms a vital component of the Army’s growing role in Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA)—a national security strategy that seeks to protect the country’s vast archipelagic waters and detect emerging threats within its maritime borders. The deployment of Army aircraft, they said, demonstrates the Army’s sharpened capability to assist in securing the nation’s territory, bolstering joint efforts with other branches of the Armed Forces and partner agencies.

Officials emphasized that the mission not only supports routine surveillance but also strengthens deterrence against transnational crimes, illegal entry, and other security risks prevalent in the Sulu Archipelago and nearby seas. By expanding its operational footprint, the Aviation Regiment contributes to safeguarding not only the Philippines’ archipelagic and territorial waters but also its exclusive economic zone (EEZ)—a maritime area crucial for resource protection and national development.

The Regiment also highlighted its ongoing modernization and international cooperation efforts. Recently, its personnel joined the Maritime Air Surveillance Subject Matter Expert Exchange and Workshop with the Australian Defence Force, a collaboration aimed at enhancing technical skills, interoperability, and strategic coordination.

As the Army’s Aviation Regiment continues to grow its capabilities, its presence in the country’s southern maritime borders is expected to play an increasingly vital role in securing sea lanes, supporting internal security operations, and reinforcing the Philippines’ sovereignty over its maritime domain.
